Peoria approves fee for residents who miss weekly trash, recycling collection date

Peoria residents who do not put their trash or recycling cans out on the designated day and ask the city to return on an off-day will be subject to a $50 fee beginning on July 2.

The city council approved the penalty on Tuesday during its yearly fee review process, according to a press release.

Officials said solid waste crews receive about 1,500 “go-back” requests per year from residents who ask them to pick up their trash after the scheduled collection day.

The new fee, along with two others approved by the council, is projected to create about $90,000 for Peoria. About $80,000 of that total is expected to come from the go-back fee, based on the number of requests made in previous years.

The current trash and recycling collection process won’t be affected once the fee is in place.
