Suspect arrested for fatally shooting relative in Peoria

A Phoenix man was arrested after allegedly shooting and killing his relative in Peoria on Saturday night.

PHOENIX — A Phoenix man was arrested after allegedly shooting and killing his relative in Peoria on Saturday night.

Officers responded to a shooting call near 83rd and Olive avenues in Peoria around 11 p.m., according to the Peoria Police Department.

After arriving, officers found 45-year-old Warren Honeywood from Buckeye lying on the floor inside a home suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Authorities treated Honeywood before he ultimately died at the scene.

What do authorities believe led up to the Peoria shooting?

Authorities believe a domestic violence incident between Honeywood and another individual was taking place in a bedroom when a relative later identified as 19-year-old Joshua Mayfield-Chavez Jr. confronted Honeywood and shot him.

Mayfield-Chavez Jr. was later arrested in Phoenix by Peoria police without incident, according to authorities.

After being transported to the Peoria Police Department, Mayfield-Chavez Jr. faces charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, disorderly conduct with a weapon, discharging a firearm in city limits and endangerment.

No other information was made available.

The investigation remains ongoing.
