PHOENIX – Police said a man walking near a Phoenix intersection was killed when he was hit by a car early Thursday.
The intersection at 27th Avenue and McDowell Road was closed in all four directions through the part of the commuter rush.
The man, later identified as 37-year-old Chris Hamilton, was pronounced dead at the scene around 3 a.m.
The 45-year-old driver remained on scene. Impairment does not appear to be a factor.
Sgt. Tommy Thompson said the investigation was ongoing.
Arizona has one of the highest pedestrian death rates in the country.
The Governors Highway Safety Association reported that 125 Arizonans had been killed in street traffic accidents over the first six months of 2018, up from 112 the previous half-year.
