Pedestrian dead after being struck by vehicle in Phoenix

The driver in the late-night crash near 48th and Van Buren streets stayed on the scene, police said.

A pedestrian died late Sunday night after being struck by a vehicle, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

According to investigators, 44-year-old Sharmarke Ismail, was crossing midblock on 48th Street near Van Buren Street when he was struck, police said.

Officers responded to reports of the collision involving a pedestrian in the area at 11:53 p.m. and found Ismail lying in the roadway with critical injuries.

Fire personnel brought him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Ismail stayed on the scene and showed no signs of impairment, police said.
