Part of Interstate 17 in north Phoenix reopens after vehicle fire

PHOENIX — A vehicle fire on the Interstate 17 in north Phoenix caused the closure of the roadway Tuesday, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The fire forced the closure of the three left lanes on the northbound I-17 south of Anthem Way. The road reopened in full by 8 p.m. The center and right lanes had reopened just before 7 p.m.

The southbound lanes of the highway were not affected.

The fire was first reported around 5:45 p.m. It was extinguished by 6 p.m.

The driver was able to get out of the vehicle, which was described as a white pick-up truck that was loaded with tires.

There were no other reported injuries.

It was not clear when the roadway would be fully reopened.

Traffic was getting by on the right shoulder. Drivers should expect heavy traffic in the area.
