Over 380K coronavirus vaccine doses coming to Arizona by end of month

PHOENIX — Gov. Doug Ducey announced Wednesday that Arizona is expected to receive more than 383,000 doses of the coronavirus vaccine by the end of December.

The Arizona Department of Health Service has placed the order for the first shipment, which is expected to arrive the week of Dec. 13, according to a news release from the Governor’s Office.

In the first week, Maricopa County will receive 47,000 doses and Pima County will receive around 11,000 doses.

During the next week, vaccines will be distributed to all 15 counties, at least four tribes and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Pharmacy Partnership program for vaccinations at skilled nursing facilities.

Arizona’s COVID-19 vaccine distribution plan has prioritized health care workers, residents of long term care facilities, educators and vulnerable populations.

The federal government is dispersing doses to states based on population.

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump celebrated the expected approval of the first U.S. vaccine for the coronavirus as the White House worked to instill confidence in the massive distribution effort that will largely be executed by President-elect Joe Biden.

The impending arrival of the coronavirus vaccine comes as coronavirus cases continue to surge in the state. On Wednesday, Arizona health authorities reported 4,444 new coronavirus cases with 108 additional deaths, bringing the state’s documented totals to 382,601 COVID-19 infections and 7,081 fatalities.
