Old Town Scottsdale getting several upgrades via $40 million revitalization project

PHOENIX — Changes are coming to Old Town Scottsdale thanks to a new project that will invest $40 million into revitalizing the area’s infrastructure.

City Manager Greg Caton said the project was shaped by feedback from business leaders in the area.

“City staff and I have spent considerable time speaking with merchants and property owners in Old Town and we have consistently heard interest for the city to invest in public infrastructure,” Caton said in a Monday announcement.

What improvements are coming through Old Town Scottsdale project?

One of the big changes will be the expansion of the Brown Avenue parking structure, which will cost $15.2 million. The Old Town Farmers Market will be relocated to a nearby site. Details about where this site is will soon be announced.

The Scottsdale Entertainment District’s parking garage will also be upgraded with another $15.2 million.

City leaders also invested $7.9 million to improve the Main Street from 69th Avenue to Scottsdale Road. Enhanced sidewalks, landscaping and lighting are coming to the area.

Various meetings will be held to gather approval or public input before these projects move forward.

It’s not the only Old Town Scottsdale project going on

While several Old Town Scottsdale projects are planned for the distant future, a $2 million initiative called ‘Spruce Up Old Town’ is already underway, with crews intensifying cleaning in high-traffic areas like the entertainment district and Fifth Avenue shopping district.

The project will also replace ashtray receptacles with newer models that reflect the area’s unique aesthetic.

Already the project has been responsible for the repainting of stairwells, railings and bollards in the Wells Fargo parking garage, according to the announcement.

Through October, crews will improve streets, parking lots and alleyways across 374,000 square yards of asphalt through microsealing, overlay treatments and more.

Another change coming to the city is the addition of a new route to the Scottsdale Trolley on Thursday.
