Officials: Millennials will cause more traffic congestion on Phoenix freeways

PHOENIX — Already dread that 5 o’clock, rush hour traffic? Officials said it is about to get much worse.

During a national commuting event Monday, officials with the U.S. Department of Transportation said the number of millennials entering the workforce will make freeway traffic much worse, according to the Phoenix Business Journal.

Since there are more millennials entering the workforce than there are baby boomers leaving, DOT officials have projected that traffic on freeways nationwide will increase.

While officials said millennials drive approximately 20 percent fewer miles than their parents did at their age, the size of the demographic will increase traffic and the demand for driving alternatives, according to the article.

While transportation officials said major cities need to offer drivers various commuting alternatives, they also acknowledged that there is a lack of funding as-is to keep up with various road and bridge repairs.

According to the article, DOT’s traffic trends have predicted that traffic in Omaha, Nebraska, will look like traffic in Los Angeles in 2045.
