Authorities identify known fugitive killed in officer-involved shooting in Mesa

PHOENIX — Authorities have identified the known gang member who died Friday afternoon in an officer-involved shooting in Mesa.

Edgar Cardenas was the fugitive wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service and Mesa Police Department, according to the U.S. Marshals Service District of Arizona.

Cardenas was wanted for the following: aggravated assault, aggravated assault domestic violence, disorderly conduct with a weapon, misconduct involving weapons, threats and assault.

The shooting occurred at 32nd Street and Baseline Road, according to Mesa police.

U.S. Marshals Service Arizona’s WANTED Task Force located Cardenas at a residence near 87th Street and Baseline Road and continued to surveil him as he drove away from the home.

Authorities said Task Force members tried to stop the man’s vehicle before he fired multiple rounds at officers.

Police returned fire, striking Cardenas who later died.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The East Valley Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
