Officer hospitalized with ‘serious’ injuries after car hits patrol vehicle in central Phoenix

PHOENIX — A Phoenix police officer was hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries after a car traveling in the opposite direction hit a patrol vehicle Monday evening in central Phoenix, authorities said.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, the crash occurred in the area of Seventh Avenue and Heatherbrae Drive around 6:28 p.m., and a second officer in the vehicle was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

The driver of the car involved in the crash refused transport. However, they were detained, and potential charges will be decided once the investigation is complete, police said.

Preliminary information suggested that the driver of the car lost control and swerved left of the center lane before hitting the patrol vehicle.

Impairment is not believed to be a factor, but speed may be, according to authorities.
