PHOENIX — So much for pipe-smoking professors.

Northern Arizona University became the last of the public universities in the state to initiate a campus-wide ban on tobacco products, including e-cigarettes.

The school’s tobacco-free policy went into effect late last week.

University President Rita Cheng announced in May the Flagstaff school would ban tobacco products.

Arizona State went tobacco-free in 2013 while the University of Arizona did the same in 2014.

There are exceptions to the ban at NAU.

Tobacco used in research or for educational purposes are excluded, as was tobacco to be used in Native American-related cultural activities.

The move to go tobacco-free was mostly driven by students.
