Northern Arizona University hazing sentencing brings 60 days in jail for ex-fraternity leader

A former Northern Arizona University fraternity leader was sentenced Wednesday to 60 days in jail and three years of probation in the hazing death of an 18-year-old pledge.

Carter Eslick, 20, pleaded guilty in August to a felony hazing charge in the death of Colin Martinez. His plea agreement capped his sentence at four years of probation and up to a year in jail, according to Coconino County Superior Court records.

Martinez was found unresponsive Jan. 31 after a Delta Tau Delta recruitment event at an off-campus home in Flagstaff. According to court documents, he and three other pledges were made to drink two bottles of vodka.

An autopsy found his blood-alcohol level was 0.425%, more than five times the legal limit of 0.08% for driving.

Eslick was the chapter’s new member educator.

Two other executive board members were also arrested. NAU suspended the fraternity after Martinez’s death, and the national organization closed the chapter.
