PHOENIX — A new Safeway supermarket is scheduled to open in Peoria near the end of next week.
The store, located on the northwest corner of 83rd Avenue and Happy Valley Road, will open its doors on Friday, Oct. 18 at 6 a.m.
It features a full-service pharmacy, expanded Starbucks and seating area, designer floral department, an expansive wine and craft beer area and a full-service sushi counter.
“We’re thrilled to unveil this beautiful and highly upgraded Safeway store to residents in Peoria,” Carl Huntington, the president of the southwest division for Safeway, said in a press release. “This upscale Safeway will give shoppers the finest selection of foods, along with a great experience each time they visit us.”
More than 150 people have been hired to work at the new store.
A ribbon-cutting celebration is set to begin on Oct. 18 at 9 a.m.
Local dignitaries, and Arizona Cardinals’ mascot Big Red and cheerleaders are slated to participate in the event.
The public is invited to attend. Free bags of groceries will be given to the first 200 shoppers after the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
More than a dozen nearby schools and nonprofits will be awarded over $100,000 in grants from the Safeway Foundation.
Safeway is part of Albertsons Companies, Inc. and is one of the largest food and drug retailers in North America, according to the release.
