16 new inspection lanes to open at San Luis border crossing

PHOENIX — Sixteen new vehicle inspection lanes will open Friday at the San Luis Port of Entry, doubling the crossing’s northbound capacity at Arizona’s second-busiest non-commercial border port.

The expansion is part of a $356 million modernization project to replace the port’s original 1984 facility with new inspection buildings and infrastructure designed to handle growing cross-border traffic between Arizona and Mexico.

The port currently serves 3 million drivers and 2.5 million pedestrians annually, according to the General Services Administration (GSA).

“This expansion will significantly increase inspection capacity, strengthen border security, support economic growth and provide a more efficient crossing experience,” said Carlos Gonzalez, acting director of field operations for U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Arizona.

The modernization project also helps the estimated 2.5 million pedestrians who use the San Luis border crossing annually. The renovation expands the processing booths from 10 to 14 and adds a new 21,000-square-foot pedestrian inspection building. Construction on the segment is slated to last through Spring 2029.

The port will remain fully operational during construction.

GSA officials added that the redesigned facility will incorporate solar panels, battery storage and a microgrid system allowing 24/7 operations independent of the electric grid.

“The modernization of the San Luis I Land Port of Entry is an investment in the future of Arizona and the entire U.S.-Mexico border region,” said GSA acting commissioner Andrew Heller.
