Man in motorized wheelchair dies after getting hit by vehicle on Phoenix roadway

PHOENIX – A man using a motorized wheelchair was struck and killed by a vehicle in west Phoenix on Sunday night, authorities said.

Officers responded to the area of 60th Lane and McDowell Road around 9:40 p.m. and found a man in his 70s with critical injuries, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

The patient, identified later as 77-year-old Douglas Ford, died after being taken to a hospital.

The man driving the vehicle remained at the scene and showed no signs of impairment, police said. He was hospitalized with injuries that aren’t considered life-threatening.

“Preliminary information indicates the man in the motor wheelchair was crossing in a northbound direction and not using a crosswalk when he was struck by the vehicle,” Sgt. Lorraine Fernandez said in a media advisory.

No other details were made available. The investigation is ongoing.
