More Arizonans were arrested for DUIs over Labor Day weekend this year than in 2023

PHOENIX — Authorities arrested more Arizonans for driving under the influence this Labor Day weekend than last year.

New data from the Arizona Governor’s Highway Safety found the total number of DUI arrests this year was 462.

Of those, 76 were aggravated DUIs, while 386 were misdemeanor DUIs.

That’s an increase from the total DUI arrests of 411 last year, which included 68 aggravated DUIs and 343 misdemeanor DUIs.

On top of that, there were 18 under-21 DUI arrests this year. That’s an increase from last year’s total number of 14 arrests in this category.

Furthermore, authorities issued more child restraint citations this year. Over Labor Day weekend in 2024, 54 child restraint citations were given out, an increase from 2023, which saw 47 citations.

Distracted driver citations were also up. 180 drivers were given these citations compared to 133 in 2023.

There were also 197 30-day vehicle impounds, while in 2023, there were only 181.

Criminal speed citations was another category that jumped out in the report. There were 224 citations in this category. In 2023, authorities only issued 173 citations.

Good news from Arizona report on Labor Day weekend DUI statistics

On a positive note, DUI drug arrests were down from last year: 107 people were arrested during Labor Day this weekend compared to 110 in 2023.

Drivers in Arizona also had a slightly lower known BACs this Labor Day weekend, with an average 0.157. It’s just below from the 0.158 average the year before.

DUI drug arrests was another category down from the previous year, going from 2023’s total of 110 to 107 this Labor Day weekend.

Civil speed citations were also down from 2023; 3,569 drivers got citations in this category. Meanwhile, in 2023, there were 3,659.
