Monsoon storms bring rain to parts of the Valley Monday night

PHOENIX — Monsoon storms popped up around the Valley on Monday night, bringing rain to parts of metro Phoenix.

A storm just before 6 p.m. dropped just under a half inch of rain in north Phoenix, according to the Maricopa County Flood Control District rain gauges, causing wet pavement on a portion of Interstate 17 during rush hour.

Another storm developed an hour later in the East Valley, producing moderate to heavy rainfall with more than three-quarters of an inch being recorded in parts of Mesa.

The evening rain followed a wet morning in metro Phoenix, as more than three-quarters of an inch was measured in areas of Goodyear.

A flash flood watch, meaning flooding is possible, is in effect across the Phoenix area and beyond through Wednesday at 5 a.m.

The high temperature on Monday in the Valley was recorded at 102 degrees, four degrees below the normal for this time of year.

It could be a busy week for monsoon weather in metro Phoenix as there is between a 20-40% chance for rain and thunderstorms each day of the week through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
