Mom dead, 4-year-old girl critical after collision with speeding Camaro in Phoenix

PHOENIX – An 18-year-old man allegedly was driving faster than 100 mph on a Phoenix street Tuesday night seconds before a collision that killed a woman and left her young daughter fighting for her life, authorities said.

Eulalio Juarez Rodriguez is accused of speeding in a Camaro westbound on Southern Avenue around 8 p.m. when he collided with a Hyundai turning left on 32nd Avenue, the Phoenix Police Department said in a press release Wednesday.

The unidentified woman driving the Hyundai, which was knocked into a wooden power pole, died at the scene. Her 4-year-old daughter, who was in a child restraint seat in the back seat, was taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition, police said.

Detectives determined that the Camaro was going around 115 mph 2.5 seconds before the crash and 88 mph half a second before impact. The speed limit on that stretch of Southern is 45 mph.

Rodriguez was booked for manslaughter. Police don’t believe impairment was a factor.
