PHOENIX — A missing woman walked approximately 26 miles since Thursday afternoon in search of help and was found late Friday night according to Coconino County Sheriff’s Office.

Karen Klein was searching for help for herself, husband and 10-year-old son after her vehicle had become stuck on a forest service road. While she was suffering from cold exposure, Klein was conscious and communicating with Search and Rescue teams when she was located. She was transported to a local hospital and is expected to be transferred to another hospital for further treatment.

Her husband and son hiked to an area with service to call for help on Friday afternoon. An air search for Klein was done but called off due to cloud cover.

Kane County Sheriff’s Office searchers from Utah on snowmobiles saw remnants of tracks, which they followed along the road while Coconino County Sheriff’s Office searchers were on snow machines.

Klein was found in a guard shack that had been closed for the season at the gate of the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
