Safe and sound: 83-year-old missing hiker rescued from Grand Canyon’s North Rim

Officials found a missing 83-year-old Utah man after asking the public for help locating him Wednesday.

The search for Gerald Guinn began around 5 p.m. Tuesday after his hiking companion reported that the two had become separated, according to the National Park Service.

Guinn was last seen in a remote area near the park’s northeastern boundary along Forest Service Road 610, also known as Dog Saddle. Officials said he was not carrying hiking gear or camping equipment when he disappeared.

Grand Canyon National Park, Coconino County Search and Rescue and Kane County Search and Rescue participated in the search. Crews searched from the ground and air, using drones and helicopters.

A helicopter crew located Guinn around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, about 2.5 miles from where he was last seen.

Rescue crews carried him on a litter to a nearby roadway, where emergency medical personnel evaluated him. He was then transported for further treatment.
