Military vets receive surprise gift of home repair

CHANDLER, Ariz. — A team of Home Depot volunteers are rolling up their sleeves to renovate the homes of six Valley military veterans.

One of the homes being remodeled belongs to 22-year Army veteran Brian Genthe, his wife and daughter.The Chandler resident fought in Afghanistan, Desert Storm, Iraq and Somalia.

Genthe was overwhelmed Thursday morning when a crew of carpenters, painters and roofers showed up on his doorstep. They also brought along with a truck filled with new shade trees.

“I have wanted to do this for years but my body won’t let me. I have a couple of problems with my back and knees from various [deployments].”

In addition to roof repairs and a new paint job, the crews will install an above-ground pool and hot tub, which will help with his therapy.

HandsOn Greater Phoenix is also on the project.
