Mexican woman sentenced for assaulting border agent in Arizona

PHOENIX — A Mexican woman was sentenced to two years in prison for pepper spraying a border patrol agent in Arizona, officials announced Tuesday.

Sandra Meza-Casillas, 51, was sentenced on Aug. 11, and her time in prison will be followed by three years of supervised release, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona.

Meza-Casillas previously pleaded guilty to assault on a federal officer.

In April, a U.S. border patrol agent in Nogales was attempting to detain someone who had jumped over the international border wall.

That agent found Meza-Casillas on a road next to the border wall, lying flat on her stomach.

When the agent approached Meza-Casillas, she began to run down the road while two men on the southside of the border wall appeared to direct her.

The agent was able to catch up to Meza-Casillas and grabbed her shoulder to try to make an arrest.

However, Meza-Casillas turned and sprayed the agent’s left cheek with pepper spray.
