Mexican teen sentenced 12 months for assaulting Border Patrol agent in Arizona

PHOENIX — A Mexican teen was sentenced to 12 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for assaulting a Border Patrol agent in Arizona, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona.

Elias Lunes-Gomez, 19, was wearing camouflage clothing and hiding in a tree near Menagers Dam when a Border Patrol Agent found him on Oct. 26, 2024.

The agent approached Lunes-Gomez, which is when the 19-year-old elbowed the agent in the ribs. Both men then fell three feet. Lunes-Gomez later put his knees on the agent’s back and hit him several times on the back of his head, according to authorities.

The agent suffered a sprained ankle, elbow contusion, lacerations to his face and hands and knee pain, authorities said.

After a struggle, the agent was eventually able to arrest Lunes-Gomez.

Lunes-Gomez pleaded guilty on March 3 and was sentenced on July 8.
