Metro Phoenix greeted with storm bringing hail, rain, cooler temperatures

PHOENIX — Oh, hail yes.

Parts of metro Phoenix were pelted with hail, rain and cooler temperatures on Thursday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Hail was reported around 1:30 p.m. in central Phoenix. NWS spotters said hail was also recorded in Avondale around the same time.

Parts of the Valley, stretching from downtown Phoenix north to Cave Creek, had measurable rainfall in the 1 p.m. hour.

“We’re having a pretty quickly evolving situation early this afternoon,” Alex Young, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Phoenix, told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Thursday. “We’re expecting these showers to last into the middle part of this afternoon.”

Other portions of metro Phoenix received precipitation earlier in the day, although most instances saw less than a tenth of an inch recorded.

Temperatures dropped into the 50s as the hail started and are expected to remain there throughout the day.

Flagstaff saw its first significant snow of the year on Thursday.

Ben Peterson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, said 4-8 inches of snowfall were expected in much of the area, with 8-10 inches in higher elevations.

A winter weather advisory was activated through 11 p.m. for the western and eastern Mogollon Rim and Black Mesa areas, including the city of Flagstaff.
