Mesa completes 7-year project to convert all 46,064 streetlights to LED

The city of Mesa’s transportation department has completed a seven-year project that converted 46,064 streetlights to light-emitting diode (LED) fixtures.

The project’s final light fixture was installed on Aug. 27, according to a news release. The light fixture was installed in front of Mesa’s Transportation Administration Building, located near 6th Street and Mesa Drive.

Mesa Mayor Mark Freeman was with streetlight technician Harry Hammonds in a two-person bucket truck to install the final LED fixture.

The project began in 2019 to convert the street lights to LED. This created savings of over 19,250 megawatt-hours of electricity per year and over $7 million in taxpayers’ dollar, according to the release.

Benefits of the new LEDs’ lifespan include fewer fixture replacement purchases, shorter staff time and fewer traffic restrictions.
