The Mesa Fire Department opened its second green fire station near Higley and Main on Tuesday.

“We’ve taken every system that you have when it comes to efficiency and electricity conservation — the lighting and everything — everything that we’re using is all pretty much part of a sustainability you see in the private sector and also the public sector,” said Forrest Smith with the Mesa Fire Department.

Smith said he hopes Fire Station 220, which includes solar panels and water heaters, is a model for other department.

The new station will save Mesa about $2,500 per year for the next 25 years.

Mesa’s other green fire station is near Elliot and Signal Butte.
