Mesa nurse practitioner accused of providing illegal opioid prescriptions

PHOENIX — A nurse practitioner from Mesa was indicted after she allegedly wrote illegal opioid prescriptions, the Arizona Attorney General’s office announced Thursday.

Deborah Ann Cooney, 59, is accused of providing the illegal prescriptions — specifically oxycodone — at her clinic in the East Valley city, according to an AG’s office press release.

Cooney was indicted on 13 counts of illegal administration of a narcotic drug and one count of fraudulent schemes and artifices.

Cooney’s Drug Enforcement Agency registration and ability to write prescriptions for controlled substances were immediately suspended as a result of her indictment.

The Phoenix office of the DEA led the investigation with the assistance of the Arizona AG’s office.
