47-year-old man kills 1, injures 2 others in apparent murder-suicide in Mesa

Authorities on Monday released the name of the suspect who killed one person and injured two others in an apparent murder-suicide that prompted a large police presence in a Mesa neighborhood Sunday night.

The Mesa Police Department identified the suspect as 47-year-old Kevin Richardson. The victim’s identity has not been released.

Officers responded about 8 p.m. to multiple 911 calls about a shooting in a residential area in the vicinity of Lindsay and Brown roads, near Mountain View High School.

Richardson, who was wearing a tactical-style helmet and vest, fired multiple shots, including several rounds at a Mesa Police Department air unit, police said.

An adult and minor in an adjacent home were struck by gunfire and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators said that preliminary information suggested that Richardson took his own life, adding that a rifle was found near him.

Authorities have not determined what led to the shooting or the kind of relationship Richardson had with the deceased victim.

The investigation is ongoing.
