Suspect in fatal shooting found dead by apparent suicide in Mesa, police say

PHOENIX — A man suspected in a fatal shooting in Mesa was found dead, apparently by suicide, in Mesa on Tuesday, according to authorities.

The Mesa Police Department responded to reports of gunshots near the Colores del Sol Apartments at McKellips Road and Mesa Drive around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

They found a man in his 30s who had been shot. Although he was brought to a hospital, he died from his injuries. The victim was identified later as 34-year-old Ramon Salazar.

What happened before man found dead by suicide in Mesa?

Witnesses helped Mesa Police officers identify the suspect as 19-year-old Diego Borquez, who was thought to be inside a nearby apartment.

Officers entered the apartment with a search warrant but found Borquez dead from what police believe to be suicide.

Police said Borquez and the victim knew each other and the shooting was a domestic violence incident. No further details were released.
