Mesa Fire and Medical Department mourning death of longtime firefighter

The Mesa Fire and Medical Department is in mourning after the death of longtime firefighter Mark Keller.

PHOENIX — The Mesa Fire and Medical Department is in mourning after the death of longtime firefighter Mark Keller.

Keller was found dead while on duty Tuesday morning, the department said. No details about how he died were made available.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss,” Chief Mary Cameli said in a press release. “Department leadership, United Mesa Firefighters Local 2260, peer support services and fire chaplains are supporting the Keller family and members of the department. I ask that the Keller family be in everyone’s thoughts and prayers today.”

Mark Keller joined Mesa Fire and Medical in 1990

Keller worked as a firefighter in Mesa for 35 years.

Mayor Mark Freeman, a retired fire captain paramedic, worked alongside Keller for years.

“I had the privilege of witnessing his dedication to our community firsthand,” Freeman said in the release. “I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Keller family, his crew and all members of the Mesa Fire and Medical Department. Mark’s legacy will continue to inspire us all.”
