Merry Main Street festival returns to downtown Mesa for sixth year

PHOENIX — Holiday cheer is returning to downtown Mesa Nov. 27 through Jan. 2 with the sixth annual Merry Main Street festival.

The event kicks off at 5:50 p.m. with a virtual tree lighting ceremony of the four-story tall Christmas tree that sits at Main Street and MacDonald.

Visitors can go ice skating at the more than 5,000-square-foot Winter Wonderland Ice Rink at Mesa City Hall Plaza. The rink will be open Monday through Friday 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday through Sunday 12 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Due to coronavirus restrictions, guests must pre-purchase tickets to the rink for a specific day and time for one hour of skating time plus skate rentals.

A maximum of 50 people will be allowed to skate at once. Masks are required in certain areas.

Decorations around the rink will be special vintage Christmas decor that hasn’t been used in downtown Mesa since 1967.

Kids can visit Santa for free from Nov. 28 to Dec. 19. He’ll be available Fridays and Saturdays from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. near the Main Street Christmas tree. Santa will be inside a snow globe with kids able to sit, talk to him and take pictures in front of the globe.

Other events, such as fairytale storytime, will be featured throughout the season and can be found at the festival’s website.
