PHOENIX — A man wanted in connection with the Mercedes Vega murder case was booked into a Valley jail Monday morning after being extradited from Tennessee, authorities said.
Sencere Hayes, 22, was arrested in Hamilton County, which encompasses the Chattanooga area, on Nov. 11, over a year-and-a-half after Vega was left to die in a burning vehicle on the side of a West Valley freeway.
Hayes was booked into a Maricopa County jail on counts of first-degree murder, kidnapping, armed robbery and vehicle theft. His bond was set at $2 million.
“This arrest is a testament to our detectives’ and law enforcement partners’ unwavering dedication and commitment to ensuring justice for Mercedes Vega and her loved ones,” Maricopa County Sheriff Russ Skinner said in a statement. “While there is still much work to be done, in collaboration with state, local and federal partners, we hope this arrest brings Mercedes’ family one step closer to finding closure from this horrific crime.”
