Prosecutors seeking death penalty in case involving men suspected of killing Mercedes Vega

PHOENIX — Prosecutors in Maricopa County are seeking the death penalty against the two men suspected of murdering Mercedes Vega in 2023.

Both 23-year-old Sencere Hayes and 29-year-old Cudjoe Young are facing charges of first-degree murder and other felony offenses, according to a Wednesday announcement from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

Vega’s body was found in a burning vehicle on I‑10 near Tonopah on April 17, 2023, while her own car was later located across the Valley near Mill Avenue.

Hayes was arrested in Hamilton County, Tennessee, on Nov. 11, 2024, about 18 months after Vega’s death.

What is known about Mercedes Vega murder investigation?

Vega, who was 22 when she died, lived in Tempe.

Media accounts citing the medical examiner’s report said the cause of death was smoke inhalation and burns. But there also were signs of blunt force trauma, a gunshot injury and bleach in her throat.

Young allegedly robbed Vega at gunpoint in 2020, after which she identified him out of a lineup and prepared a victim’s impact statement, according to ABC15.

Vega’s mother previously told KTAR News 92.3 FM in 2024 that she mentioned the potential robbery connection to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said Vega’s family deserves justice.

“I believe the death penalty is an appropriate sentencing consideration for the jury for these two defendants,” Mitchell said in the announcement. “We will continue to pursue justice for Mercedes Vega and her family.”

The case is still being prosecuted.
