MCSO locates body believed to be missing 42-year-old man swept away in floodwaters

PHOENIX — The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office found the body of missing Goodyear man Vincent Upton on Monday.

The 42-year-old man had been swept away by floodwaters early Sunday morning.

The sheriff’s office responded to 214th Avenue and Narramore Road in Buckeye for reports of a white pickup truck stuck in floodwaters around 3:30 a.m.

MCSO said that the caller said the truck had been swept away northbound through the wash.

William Jinks, an MCSO spokesman, said during a press conference that deputies were able to locate the truck within 30 minutes of being called but that no one was inside.

He noted that the truck was “heavily damaged” and that none of Upton’s belongings had been found.

The sheriff’s office mobilized a large search party to look for Upton. It included several members of MCSO’s command staff, five search and rescue coordinators, four drone pilots, multiple deputies, including a flood control specialist, almost two dozen volunteer posse members from different branches and a K-9 posse.

MCSO said in a statement to KTAR News 92.3 FM that the body was found a “considerable distance” from where the truck was located.

Upton’s next of kin was reportedly notified.

“Due to the difficult terrain, conditions and incoming weather MCSO deputies are currently working on extracting Vincent from the location utilizing our aviation unit,” Jink said in the statement.
