MCSO investigating credit card skimmers at Anthem gas station

PHOENIX – More than a dozen customers at an Anthem gas station fell prey to credit card skimmers last month, and there are probably many more victims, authorities said Friday.

On July 23, a repairman working on an out-of-order pump at the Circle K on 39414 N. Daisy Mountain Drive, just east of Interstate 10, and found signs of tampering, Sgt. Joaquin Enriquez of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office told KTAR News 92.3 FM.

The repairman then checked the rest of the pumps and found two with skimmers installed.

“We do have information that skimmers were put in place at only two of these pumps, however, we are working with local law enforcement agencies around the Valley to see if this is part of a larger scheme, maybe some kind of organized crime,” Enriquez said.

So far, 13 people connected to the location have reported credit card fraud, Enriquez said, but many more used those pumps while the skimmers were installed.

“We do know that there’s a lot more (potential victims) in the Anthem area,” Enriquez said.

The skimmers apparently were in place for at least two weeks, he said.

Most of the reported victims said their card numbers were used fraudulently over the first weekend of August.

Enriquez said the skimmers can be high tech and difficult to detect, but customers should look for signs of broken seals and exposed wires.

“Look, be aware, observe, touch, feel, and if you see something that doesn’t look right notify the attendant,” he said.
