MCSO holding memorial Friday for fallen detention officer
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office will hold a memorial service Friday for a detention officer who was fatally attacked by an inmate last week.

PHOENIX — The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office will hold a memorial service Friday for a detention officer who was fatally attacked by an inmate last week.
The service for Officer Gene “Jim” Lee will be held at Comerica Theatre at 400 W. Washington St. in downtown Phoenix from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Doors will open at noon.
The public is invited to the event.
Lee was attacked by inmate Daniel Davitt at the Lower Buckeye Jail on Oct. 29.
Davitt allegedly grabbed him by the throat without warning and kicked his feet out from under him.
Lee landed headfirst on the concrete and lost consciousness.
A procedure was done to remove blood and pressure from around Lee’s brain, but he never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead the following day.
Lee was an engineer before he joined the sheriff’s office, where he served for six years.
The MCSO volunteer posse, of which Lee was a member before he became an officer, was accepting donations for his family.

The sheriff’s office also held fundraisers for the family on Tuesday and Wednesday.
