PHOENIX — President Donald Trump issued a statement on Wednesday regarding the news that Arizona Sen. John McCain was diagnosed with brain cancer.

“Sen. John McCain has always been a fighter,” the statement read. “Melania and I send our thoughts and prayers to Sen. McCain, Cindy, and their entire family. Get well soon.”

McCain’s diagnosis followed the removal of a 2-inch blood clot in his skull.

The president’s condolences were among many that were issued on Wednesday by people across the political spectrum and beyond.

This, despite the relationship between Trump and McCain being historically tumultuous. In 2015, Trump’s remarks about McCain not being a war hero sparked controversy.

Conversely, McCain has criticized Trump in the past — largely based on political differences — and said that some of the scandals that have embroiled the president in the early stages of his tenure are “of Watergate scale and size.“
