Mayo Clinic buys 288 acres for expansion around Phoenix hospital

PHOENIX – The Mayo Clinic bought 228 acres around its north Phoenix campus on Wednesday to facilitate ambitious expansion plans.

“Leading in the transformation of health care on behalf of patients everywhere is central to Mayo Clinic’s strategy,” Dr. Gianrico Farrugia, Mayo Clinic CEO, said in a press release.

“We believe the acquisition of this land is one of these opportunities, giving us a new canvas to co-create with innovators in science and biotechnology.”

The $139 million purchase was made through public auction from the Arizona State Land Department, according to the release.

The parcel wraps around the north and east sides of the hospital and neighboring Arizona State University Health Futures Center between 56th and 64th streets and south of the Loop 101 Pima Freeway.

“Mayo Clinic will use a portion of the land for continued expansion of our Phoenix campus and our patient-centered model of care,” Dr. Richard Gray, CEO for Mayo Clinic in Arizona, said in the release.

The expansion plans also include “Discovery Oasis,” a biotechnology corridor to share with collaborators in the field.

“Discovery Oasis will be fertile ground in the desert, where new ideas can move rapidly from science to patient-care solutions to biomanufacturing and broad application,” Gray said.

The Phoenix Mayo Clinic was No. 41 worldwide and No. 12 nationally in Newsweek’s 2021 hospital rankings.
