Marine killed in parachute training exercise in Arizona

PHOENIX — A Marine was killed during a training operation this week in Arizona, officials said.

According to Patch.com, the Marine was identified as Alejandro Romero, a native of Carson, California.

Romero’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to help raise money for funeral expenses. The page said that the U.S. Marine Corps has provided a set amount that will go toward burial expenses but not all expenses will be covered.

“[Romero] was looked up to, admired, deeply loved and will forever be greatly missed,” the page said. “[He] will continue to live through his wife, mother, father, brother, sister, nephews, friends and extended family.”

Romero was performing a jump known as the double-bag static line when residents said they saw him fall wrapped up in his parachute. They called 911 and tried to resuscitate him, but he died in the hospital.

According to the Marine Corps Times, there have been 21 total parachute mishaps, five of which involved static-line jumps.

In the jump, a line is connected to the chute and when the jumper exits the aircraft, the static line that is hooked to the inside of the aircraft catches and pulls the chute free.

There is an investigation into the incident taking place and the double-bag static line jump has been suspended.
