Maricopa County breaks ground on new tabulation and election center

PHOENIX — Maricopa County broke ground on a new tabulation and election center on May 22, the county announced Monday.

Besides supporting election administration, the center is designed to allow the county to conduct pre-tabulation processing as well as ballot tabulation in a secure, efficient and transparent manner.

“When it comes to running elections, three things are of the utmost importance to me: following state law as prescribed by the Legislature, transparency and focusing on what best serves Maricopa County voters,” Chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, District 2 Thomas Galvin said in a press release.

“This facility is a momentous step forward in achieving all three objectives and setting a new bar for how elections are run nationwide.”

The center is expected to open in summer 2027.

Details on Maricopa County’s new tabulation and election center

The new facility is expected not only to triple the amount of warehouse space for equipment storage but also more than double the capacity for pre-tabulation process and ballot tabulation.

It will contain command centers that will support in-person voting, act as a space to train and process temporary election workers, have expanded observation viewing areas as well as a media-friendly space for election coverage.

Election function that report up to the Board of Supervisors as well as the Recorder’s Office will also be housed there.

The facility was designed, by the architecture firm DLR Group, with security enhancements to keep election staff, tabulation equipment and ballots safe.

The design phase for the project began in September 2023 and the first construction contract was approved by the Board of Supervisors in February 2025.

“We’ve grown exponentially to 2.6 million registered voters and hone from elections that weren’t close to a divided electorate where our races are closer than ever. The way this facility was designed will be looked at by other jurisdictions as a model in efficient, transparent election administration,” Supervisor for District 5 Steve Gallardo said in a press release.
