PHOENIX — Maricopa County has been approved for federal disaster relief aid to help recovery efforts from September flooding, the Governor’s Office announced.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer declared a state of emergency about an hour after single-day record rainfall drenched Phoenix on Sept. 8. The National Weather Service reported almost three inches of rain fell on metro Phoenix in seven hours.

President Barack Obama also approved aid for La Paz County, west of Maricopa County, which also suffered damage in the storm.

The Public Assistance Program will reimburse 75 percent of costs to remove debris and and permanently restore public infrastructure.

Grants from the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program will be earmarked for statewide projects that lessen impact of future emergencies.

Small businesses damaged by that storm can apply for loans through the U.S. Small Business Administration.
