Maricopa County Court, Phoenix city court cancel jury selection for day

PHOENIX – Maricopa County canceled jury selection for Monday, the Superior Court announced, citing concern over the coronavirus outbreak.

The Judicial Branch of Arizona staff was trying to contact prospective jurors by phone or email, a spokeswoman said on the website.

Signs were also placed around courts and in parking lots.

Those would-be jurors’ service has been fulfilled, the court said, but jurors already seated “needed to contact the chambers of the judicial officer presiding over the case directly for specific information about the status of your service.”

Phoenix Municipal Court also released jurors from duty the same morning.

The U.S. District Court of Arizona said Friday all civil and criminal jury trials that had already begun were to be completed but those trial scheduled to “commence on or before April 10, 2020, are continued pending further order of the Court.”

The number of COVID-19 cases in Arizona has reached 18, with six new cases reported Monday.
