PHOENIX — A 32-year-old man was killed and a police officer suffered injuries as part of a shooting in Tempe on Friday night.

According to the Tempe Police Department, the incident started around 6:30 p.m. when a police officer recognized a man who had a felony warrant for drug sales at a Circle K convenience store near Rural and Baseline roads.

The man fled the store in a vehicle, then got out of it and ran from police, who were pursuing him.

Officers chased the man, whom police later identified as Matthew Granado, on foot.

According to police, Granado shot a gun at the officers and one officer was struck by a bullet in one of his legs.

Police officers shot back at Granado, striking him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The wounded officer was taken to a nearby hospital where he underwent successful surgery.
