PHOENIX — A man was recently sentenced to more than three years in prison for a fraud scheme that targeted elderly Arizonans, officials announced Monday.

According to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, 21-year-old Jixiong Zhang pleaded guilty to multiple felony charges in connection with three different cases. They included theft, money laundering and helping a criminal organization.

Zhang was also ordered to pay $79,500 in restitution to the victims of the scheme.

Prosecutors said the victims were told that their bank accounts or online purchases had been compromised and they needed to withdrawal large amounts of cash, then give the money to couriers sent to collect it.

Between October and December 2024, Zhang acted as a courier in the scam.

The victims included people who were 83, 93, 94 and 99 years old, according to prosecutors.

Investigators found that Zhang attempted to collect more than $112,500 from the victims.

“Targeting seniors in fraud schemes is particularly cruel,” Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said in the announcement. “These crimes steal more than money. They take away a sense of security and trust. We will continue to pursue and prosecute those who prey on older adults in our community.”

Following his prison time, Zhang will face immigration proceedings.

Only three years? I have a better idea. It involves a stump, some nails, and a hammer.
