Man found dead after shooting police car during traffic stop in Phoenix

PHOENIX — One man was found dead after being accused of firing a gun at police officers during a traffic stop on Saturday morning.

Police said one man opened fire, striking a police vehicle after being pulled over for driving with an expired license plate near Glendale Avenue and Interstate 17.

According to police, the man then fled in his car and abandoned the vehicle near the intersection of 31st and Myrtle avenues.

While searching for the suspect, police heard another gun shot and shortly found the body of the suspect nearby with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officers said a gun was found lying next to the suspect.

No officers were injured and no officers fired their weapons during the incident.

The incident remains under investigation at this time.
