PHOENIX – A 27-year-old man apparently drowned while swimming in the Salt River on Memorial Day, authorities said.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday there were no signs of foul play in the death of Jose Daniel Castillo-Gonzalez.
A witness told sheriff’s deputies that Castillo-Gonzalez was swimming at the Sheep’s Crossing recreation area along the Salt River tubing route around 4 p.m. Monday when he went under the water and did not resurface.
Deputies and swimmers at the scene were able to find the victim, but life-saving measures were unsuccessful, MCSO said.
No other information was immediately available.
The area where the incident occurred is located off Bush Highway northeast of Mesa in Tonto National Forest.
