Man in medical distress dies after Phoenix police respond to apartment disturbance

A 42-year-old man died Tuesday after Phoenix police found him making incoherent statements and suffering from self-inflicted injuries at a west Phoenix apartment complex, authorities said.

Officers responded just before 4 p.m. Tuesday to reports of criminal damage near Black Canyon Highway and West Campbell Avenue, where a caller said a man had broken an apartment window, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Police detained the man and called fire personnel because of his injuries and erratic behavior. Paramedics found his body temperature had reached 107 degrees and that he was in physical distress. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The department’s Homicide Unit is investigating.

The man’s identity has not been released.
