Man dies in boating accident at Grand Canyon National Park

PHOENIX — A 67-year-old man died after a boat flipped on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon on Saturday, authorities said.

Park officials received reports of the incident around 2:10 p.m. near Bedrock Rapid, according to a National Park Service press release.

Ronald Vanderlugt was on his fifth day of a multi-day commercial river trip when the boat flipped.

Members of his group pulled him out and performed CPR but he remained unresponsive.

He was beyond resuscitation efforts and pronounced dead at the scene.

Four others were treated for injuries that weren’t life-threatening and flown to the South Rim Helibase.

The investigation will be conducted by the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office.
