Man dies after drowning in Salt River in Phoenix area, police say

PHOENIX — Police say a man has died after drowning in the Salt River in the Phoenix-area on Sunday.

Sgt. Joaquin Enriquez, a spokesman with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, told KTAR News 92.3 FM that the man drowned near the Blue Point Bridge on the Salt River around 3:30 p.m.

The man was tubing on the river with his friends when he broke away and tried to retrieve a tube that had floated away.

Enriquez said the man became exhausted and went under the water for an unknown period of time.

His friends then pulled him from the water and administered CPR.

The man was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Officials will investigate the death as a drowning.

The man was described only as being in his 30s.

Enriquez said it was unknown what the man’s swim skill level was and if he had any medical conditions.
