Man convicted of killing wife in Phoenix sentenced to 32 years in prison

PHOENIX — An Arizona man convicted of murdering his estranged wife in 2018 was sentenced to 32 years in prison by a Maricopa County judge.

Derek V. Minor received 25 years in prison in the Arizona Department of Corrections for second-degree murder and seven years for theft of means of transportation in Maricopa County Superior Court.

Minor was arrested on Oct. 31, 2018, in Santa Monica, Calif., as the prime suspect in the death of 54-year-old Cynthia Minor. Her body was found in an apartment near Osborn Road and 24th Street on Sept. 6 after she was reported missing in Scottsdale.

“Sadly, this sentence will not bring the victim back, but it does bring punishment to the fullest extent of the law and some closure for a family that has endured so much pain and grief,” County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said in a press release.

The couple was in the process of separating at the time of the incident.
